  • Surgical And Anesthesia Complications
  • Introduction

Surgery has become so commonplace that many people are unaware of the dangers until complications strike. Doctors’ errors on the part of surgeons and anesthesiologists, and hospital errors by nurses, technicians or lab personnel may cause serious injuries or death. Some dangers of surgery and the postoperative period occur in:

  • Anesthesia. Anesthesis or sedation, even when given for “minor” procedures, requires careful attention to drug dosages and control of respirations. While improved monitoring devices have greatly reduced the risk of anesthesia, doctors and nurse anesthetists do not always pay attention to monitors until it is too late.

  • Bariatric surgery. Bariatic surgery, intended to promote weight loss, has become increasingly common in recent years. It may involved re-routing parts of the digestive system, of reducing the size of the stomach by banding or stapling. Bariatric surgery may result in serious injuries, infections, and other complications.

  • Laparoscopic/Minimally Invasive Surgery. Laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery is a great advance, especially for gallbladder surgery, but can lead to grave injury or death if proper precautions are disregarded, or complications are not recognized and dealt with promptly.

  • Improper Positioning. Sometimes simple mistakes, such as improper positioning of the patient on the operating table, can explain injuries to parts of the body not involved in the surgery.

  • "Ghost Surgery". At teaching hospitals, some patients who expect experienced physicians to operate on them, instead are operated on by residents. Patients undergoing such “ghost surgery” often face greater risk of injury.

  • Post-Operative Complications. Complications in the post-operative period, particularly breathing problems, may go unattended by overworked nurses.
